How to stay true to who you are and why it is important and hard

When you’re a teenager, everyone seems to have an opinion about what you should be doing — teachers, parents, friends, social media, even strangers online. It’s loud out there. And in all that noise, it’s easy to lose track of something important: what you actually care about.

This is where values come in.

Values are a core part of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and over this blog series we’re going to explore how understanding your values can help you make decisions, handle stress, and feel more confident in who you are. But first, let’s start with the basics.

What Are Values?

Values are the qualities that matter most to you — the kind of person you want to be and the way you want to live your life.

They’re not goals you tick off. They’re more like directions on a compass.

  • A goal is “get an A in maths”.
  • A value is “learning and challenging myself”.

Goals can be completed. Values guide you forever.

Some examples of values:

  • Being a good friend
  • Creativity
  • Honesty
  • Adventure
  • Kindness
  • Standing up for what’s right
  • Family
  • Personal growth

Values aren’t about what other people expect from you. They’re about what feels meaningful to you, deep down.

Why Do Values Matter?

1. They help you make decisions

Life throws choices at you constantly — friendships, schoolwork, relationships, social media, future plans. When you know your values, decisions become clearer. You can ask yourself: “Does this move me towards the person I want to be?”

2. They keep you steady when things get tough

Stress, anxiety, and pressure are part of being human. Values act like an anchor. Even when things feel chaotic, you can still choose actions that line up with what matters to you.

3. They help you feel more like yourself

When you’re living in line with your values, you feel more grounded, more confident, and more connected to who you are. When you’re living against them, you often feel uncomfortable, guilty, or “off”, even if you can’t explain why.

4. They guide your long‑term direction

You don’t need to know your whole future right now. But knowing your values gives you a sense of direction — like choosing a path in a forest even if you can’t see the end of it yet.

Values vs. What Other People Want

Here’s something important: Values aren’t rules. They’re choices. Your choices.

Sometimes your values will match what others want for you. Sometimes they won’t. That’s normal. Part of growing up is learning to notice the difference between:

  • “I’m doing this because it matters to me”
  • “I’m doing this because I feel pressured to”

ACT is all about helping you move toward the first one.

So What’s Coming Next?

This is the first post in a series all about values and how to use them in real life. Over the next few posts, we’ll explore:

  • How to discover your own values (even if you feel unsure or confused)
  • How to notice when your actions are in or out of line with your values
  • How to take “valued action” — small steps that move you toward the person you want to be

You don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need to be curious about what matters to you.

A Quick Reflection to Finish

Take a moment and think about this:

When in your life have you felt most like “yourself”? What were you doing? Who were you with? What mattered to you in that moment?

Chances are, your values were showing up.
