Next Chapter Therapy Ltd. was founded with a clear objective: to provide expert trauma therapy for children and adults impacted by traumatic events. Based in Trafford, Manchester, we offer specialised mental health support and counselling that respects the unique challenges individuals face due to past experiences. Our approach is founded on evidence-based practices, ensuring the highest standard of care.

Specialised Therapeutic Approaches

We believe in mental health support that is backed by strong clinical evidence. As a leading trauma specialist in the region, using training in several effective modalities to inform pracitce, we create a tailored treatment plan. As an experienced child trauma therapist I will guide each client through a healing process designed to foster emotional strength and resilience within a safe, professional environment.

Our Core Therapeutic models

The practice uses a range of advanced therapeutic methods to inform our treatment of the complex effects of trauma. Each approach is carefully selected to meet the specific needs of the individual, whether he is a child or an adult.

  • DDP Therapy: Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, or DDP therapy, is a specialised approach focused on healing relational trauma. It is particularly effective for children and their families, helping to build secure attachments and improve communication.
  • EMDR Therapy: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, known as EMDR therapy, is a powerful psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences.
  • DBT Therapy: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, or DBT therapy, is a cognitive-behavioural treatment that helps individuals manage difficult emotions and improve their relationships.
  • ACT Therapy: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT therapy, encourages individuals to embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them, helping them to move forward and commit to positive change.

Dedicated Support for Children and Adults

As a seasoned child trauma therapist, I understand the profound impact early life experiences can have. I am committed to providing exceptional care through specialised trauma therapy that addresses the root causes of distress. Our mission is to support the emotional health of children and their families, empowering them to begin their next chapter with confidence.

Intro

Hi I'm Ian and if you are watching this I assume you are thinking about coming to see me to talk about your mental health. You might be feeling anxious about the idea of opening up to a random stranger, you possibly have some questions about what therapy is and how it works. The videos on this website will hopefully answer some of those questions as well as give you a chance to get to know me a little better.

Ian McGeoghegan

As I said in my first video my name is Ian. I found my way to being a therapist through a bit of a strange route. I started off as a teacher, wanting to help young people become the best they can be, to try and do this better I trained as a Social Worker and that led me to mental health and therapy. I am a proud Northerner and was born and raised in Manchester, about 2 minutes from the Trafford Centre. I am a massive nerd and love Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. In fact, I have a Star Wars tattoo I am that obsessed. I love playing DnD and have an entire wardrobe full of board games. I also love musical theatre, my favourite musical is probably Les Mis or Rock of Ages but that changes depending on what I have seen recently.

EMDR Eye Movement and Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a therapy mostly used to help people deal with traumatic memories but can help with lots of things from anxiety to depression. Traumatic memories are horrible things that happen to us that we cannot move on from. They keep jumping out and attacking us, making us feel really horrible feelings, remember really distressing images or sounds and make us think really not nice things about ourselves.

The way EMDR works is it takes these memories and takes the power off them and gives it back to you. It can make the memory less scary and stop it attacking you, and saying not nice things about yourself. If you haven't seen Inside Out go do that now. If you have seen Inside Out, memories are like those coloured orbs that get stored in a sensible order in your long term memory. This helps you know where the memory is, when you need it in the future. With trauma memories, these orbs are smashed up into sharp spiky pieces and hidden amongst other memories. This is often why bits of them seem to turn up unexpectedly. EMDR goes round and helps collect those pieces, put them back together and put it in the right place.

ACT - Acceptance and Committment therapy

ACT or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a really good way to help when you feel stuck, you don't feel like you are achieving much, day to day life feels hard and pointless and it is making you feel low, anxious or angry. ACT helps you to recognise what is important to you and helps you make decisions in line with what matters to you. It helps you notice when you are spending loads of energy on things that aren't working, accept what you cannot change and put the energy into something you can. We focus on things like your values and developing skills to challenge the thought, feelings and actions that are making your life worse.

It is a none judgemental way to check in with your life and develop skills to live the life you want to.

DBT - Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a really intense program which gives people the skills to cope with urges to hurt themselves and the tools to make meaningful changes so that life feels worth living. It is a really practical therapy that is very present focussed and requires almost no discussion about your past. In its proper form it is delivered in a group, however the skills are super helpful and using a DBT informed approach in our 1 to 1 sessions can help you work towards a life worth living.

DDP - Dyadic Developmental Practice

Dyadic Developmental Practice is less of a model of how to do therapy and more of a way to explore the difficult things that have happened in our past and better understand how they affect us, our actions, emotions, thoughts and relationships now. By doing this we can help reflect on a different way to approach things and work towards change. It is as much about working with carers as it is young people and involves a lot of chatting and reflecting together.
